KATHMANDU, Feb 23: The Department of Commerce (DoC) on Wednesday monitored prices at fruits and vegetables markets in the capital. This is the first time that the department monitored prices of fruits and vegetables.

Anil Thakur, director general of DoC, said the department would now onwards conduct weekly market supervision and monitor prices of fruits and vegetables in the capital every week.[break]

DoC started monitoring of fruits and vegetable prices in the capital in coordination with the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Development Board.

“We monitored more than six groceries and over a dozen fruits and vegetable stores in the capital on Wednesday. None of them had maintained price list of commodities that they are selling,” Thakur said, adding, “We have directed them to display price list on regular basis.”

Stating that price of consumer goods starts moving up from March, Thakur expressed hope that the weekly monitoring would contribute toward checking irregularities in the market.

The department has planned to monitor different products each day. It will focus on monitoring of price and quality of construction materials, groceries and fruits and vegetables.
