KATHMANDU, Jan 4: The government Friday started issuing new identity cards to former PLA combatants, who were earlier disqualified by the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) during army integration process.

Peace and Reconstruction Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi formally distributed the new cards at the party headquarters in Perisdanda to the former combatants, who had long been staging protest, demanding the removal of the ‘disqualified’ tag, among other things. [break]

“The government has given us new identity removing the disqualification tag,” Lenin Bista, who led the protest, said. “The minister himself came and is issuing the cards to us, “he added. The UNMIN-discharged fighters had been protesting at the party headquarters since November 26.

According to him, those combatants who are currently outside the capital will be issued their cards in their respective districts. The UNMIN had discharged a total of 4,008 combatants from their camps, disqualifying them for integration into national army.
