KATHMANDU, Dec 28: The government on Monday expressed concern over the decision to put off the scheduled discharge of disqualified Maoist combatants till January 7. The discharge was initially planned to begin on December 27.

“The government voiced its concern to the Maoists and the UN in Nepal over the postponement of the discharge during a steering committee meeting attended by Maoist representative and the UN on Monday,” said Bishnu Nepal, spokesperson for the peace ministry.

The Maoists and the UN decided to put off the process last Thursday, citing sports events being organized in the Maoist cantonments.

Peace Minister Rakam Chemjong said that the discharge process would be completed at the cantonment in Rolpa on February 8.
