KATHMANDU, Jan 5: A talk program on “Bridging the gap between adult literacy and schooling” was hosted today by Martin Chautari as part of their weekly education discussion series at their office in Thapathali. [break]

The speaker Shreshna Basnet, a lecturer at Kathmandu University’s department of Development Studies spoke on the prevalent problems in Nepal with respect to providing a platform for adult literacy in the country in the context when our education focus lies largely on primary education provisions.

The theme of the talk was to examine the ways in which the government and civil society in Nepal could move forward in attempting to incorporate adult learning into the academic realm of learning.

According to Basnet, the biggest obstacle is in finding a medium of education through which it is recognized that “different people have different capabilities”. The lecture was followed by an interactive discussion session on how certain measures could be undertaken to do so.

Martin Chautari conducts discussions every Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The topics and speakers vary from day to day and tend to cover issues of current concern in Nepal.
