KATHMANDU, Jan 16: Acting President of the Sher Bahadur Deuba–led Nepali Congress (NC), Purna Bahadur Khadka, has warned of nationwide protests if the Election Commission (EC) delivers any decision that, he said, runs contrary to the party’s statute.
Addressing a press conference at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Friday, Khadka said the party would mobilise cadres from ward to national levels under the NC flag and its ‘tree’ election symbol to safeguard what he described as the party’s legal standing.

Khadka reiterated that the Special General Convention organised by the faction led by then General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma—now president and vice-president—was unlawful and divisive.
“Although 40 percent of general convention representatives can demand a Special General Convention, only the Central Working Committee has the authority to convene it and determine its procedures,” Khadka said. He added that the Special General Convention was unnecessary as the party was already moving ahead with the process for a regular General Convention.
Accusing Thapa and Sharma of convening an “illegal gathering,” Khadka claimed that it was falsely portrayed as a lawful Special General Convention.
The warning comes amid an intensifying struggle between the two rival factions of the Nepali Congress, both claiming to represent the “legitimate” party before the EC.
