People involved in designing and manufacturing kitchen modules say the demand for convenient kitchens have almost doubled in recent times.[break]
“Our designs are simple and exclusive and are of high standard. This is why our products are liked by people across the country,” said Arpana Shrestha, a designer at Kitchen Concepts -- the only modular kitchen supermarket in Nepal.
Considering the rising demand for low-cost ready-made kitchens, Kitchen Concepts has started designing ´Made in Nepal´ kitchens by using locally produced raw materials.
“Upper class and middle class people have remained our major clientele so far. By introducing ´Made in Nepal´ series of ready-made kitchen, we want to tap lower middle class people too,” Shrestha added.
Under ´Made in Nepal´ series, Kitchen Concepts uses locally produced waterproof plywood and Formica. Hinges, however, are imported mainly from India and China. Readymade kitchens in ´Made in Nepal´ series are available in more than 20 color options and are priced in range of Rs 200,000 to Rs 250,000.
However, ready-made kitchens made by using materials like solid wood, medium density fiber (MDF), hub, chimney and hinges imported from countries like China, India, Italy and Austria among others cost in range of Rs 250,000 to Rs 300,000.
Shrestha said the price of kitchen modules varies depending on design, style, color, and time required for construction. “While designing kitchens, we first make field visits and study design of the house, space allocated for kitchen and customers´ interest,” she added.

´Made in Nepal´ series kitchens can be made within a month while kitchens made of imported materials take two to three months to complete, according to the company. Kitchen Concepts uses accessories and materials from Sleek - the multinational kitchen specialist -- and provides one year warranty. It provides free servicing for five to six years depending on designs and types of materials used.
Kitchen Concepts, which currently has a showroom at Teku, is planning to open branches at Kumaripati and Koteshwar in the capital and Chitwan in the near future. It already has contact offices at Bhairahawa, Hetauda and Pokhara.
