KATHMANDU, August 18 : As political parties concentrate around preparations for the Constituent Assembly (CA) election, protest programs demanding 33 percent women´s representation in the new CA has fallen under shadow.

Inter Party Women Network (IPWN) had 3 weeks ago planned to carry out agitations in the capital at four different places to create pressure for the demand to be met.

However, on seeing the parties too busy to notice them, IPWN had to cancel its street protests. [break]

“Our protest program has been affected as the political parties have been gripped by the election fever. They are busy holding programs in and outside the capital,” said CPN-UML leader Radha Gyanwali, who is also the president of IPWN. “So we are moving a bit slow with our protest programs,” she added.

Gyawali further said that until and unless the political parties ensure at least 33 percent female as their election candidates, it would not produce effective results.

Similarly, former lawmaker Binda Pandey said the election commission and the political parties should ensure not just 33 percent of women´s participation but more than that.

“If you talk about voters, 55 percent are women. The census data shows that two million youths eligible for voting are abroad. So, if not for other reasons, women must get 33 percent seat in the CA just because of their majority. They deserve more than that.”

Pandey and Gyanwali added that several women organizations and IPWN would definitely put pressure on the political parties and election commission to get the demand fulfilled.

“They should not take it as only women´s issue because it also concerns inclusion and justice,” Gyanwali said.
