ILAM, Aug 27:The possibility of the Darjeeling-based schools and colleges reopening anytime soon has dimmed as the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha, which is demanding a separate Gorkhaland state in India, forced hundreds of students into joining its street demonstration on Tuesday. Schools in Darjeeling remain closed for nearly a month now due to the Gorkhaland movement.

A huge demonstration participated by students and led by Morcha leaders marched from Darjeeling and passed through Kalimpong, Mirik, Rimbik, Duwarsh and Wijanwari areas. They also demanded immediate release of the demonstrators who have been detained over the past several weeks.

In order to pressurize the East Bengal Government and the Union Government of India to fulfill its demand, the Morcha supported by several other parties has been organizing protest rallies over the past few weeks. [break]

“The students will leave the streets only after the West Bengal government releases our arrested friends. Everyone should participate in this movement because Darjeeling belongs to each and every one of us,” said General Secretary of the Morcha, Roshan Giri.

Addressing the students, Giri said that there is no need to panic. “This revolt will not subside until the government refuses to address our demands. Moreover, the central reserve police force deployed at educational institutions should be removed immediately.”

Earlier reports said Darjeeling politicians may allow the schools and colleges to reopen from September 1.

“We request the students to bear with us for a while. Everything will be normal after our demands are met,” said Giri.
