Construction works of int'l airport delayed

KATHMANDU, Aug. 20: Construction works of the second international airport of Nepal could not move ahead after the government made decision of forwarding the construction works of the projects of more than Rs. 20 billion through the Investment Board (IB) in the context that the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation was studying the feasibility study report.



A situation has been seen for forwarding the project through the Board after the government´s decision. The Ministry is in dilemma after the new government policy.[break]



It is learnt that the Board has already sent a letter to the Ministry to provide progress report of so far deciding to take responsibility for the construction of the second international airport.



Secretary at the Ministry, Yagya Prasad Gautam, said that they will move ahead by holding discussions with the Board on whose responsibility it was of construction of the airport -- the Ministry or the Board.



Confusion has been seen on responsibility for the construction of the airport.Gautam said "We will resolve problems by holding discussions".



Construction works of the Nijgadh airport in Bara district were started as an alternative to Tribhuvan International Airport.



The Ministry has prepared a summarized report about the airport construction based on a 100-page feasibility study report prepared by the Korean company- Landmark Worldwide. It took six months for the Company to complete the feasibility study on the Project.



Earlier, the Tourism Ministry had sent a letter to the Foreign Ministry asking it to acquire information about the company´s financial status, physical condition and efficiency.



The BOOT Committee formed under the convenorship of the National Planning Commission Vice Chairman is also studying the report. The airport is to be constructed and operated under the BOOT Model.



The concerned have vowed to take the project ahead without any obstructions. But of late, the Board and the Ministry have a dispute over the jurisdiction issues.



The Korean company had submitted the feasibility study report to the Ministry in 2066 BS. The study was completed at the cost of around Rs. 360 million.The study has estimated a cost of Rs. 35.51 billion for the construction of the project.
