“The road will have a bridge across the Bheri River to reach Rukum,” Yuba Raj Pandey, member secretary of NPC, told myrepublica.com. “After a short track in Rukum, the road will turn to Jajarkot through another bridge to be built over the same river.” [break]
Some Maoist leaders of Rukum, including Janardan Sharma Prabhakar, wanted to build the road through their own district. Lawmakers of Jajarkot wanted NPC to take a decision in their favor. Due to differences between lawmakers, the road project was in limbo.
The 130km road, which stretches from Pasagadh of Jajarkot to Dunai of Dolpa, would link the remotest districts of Karnali with the rest of the country. With the completion of the road, the government will be able to transport food grains to Dolpa through road links. So far, the government has been transporting food to Karnali through airplanes.
The government had awarded the contract of the Jajarkot-Dunai road to the Nepal Army (NA) on May 2, 2008 after the latter successfully built a road linking Chhinchu of Surkhet to Jajarkot. The NA, however, had to halt its work shortly after lawmakers of Jajarkot and Dolpa forwarded two contradictory proposals.
