KATHMANDU, April 19: The government is preparing to impose a visa fee of $2 per additional day on international tourists who have remained stranded in Nepal due to closure of airspace in some European countries following the eruption of volcano in Iceland.

Department of Immigration (DoI) has forwarded a proposal to this effect to Home Ministry in a bid to facilitate the stranded tourists, who have overstayed their visa period due to cancellation of flights following closure of airspace in some countries. [break]

“We have forwarded the proposal at the request of Nepal Tourism Board and some travel trade associations. If the proposal is approved, stranded tourists can pay visa fee as per their additional days of stay in Nepal,” Narayan Sanjel, director general of DoI, told myrepublica.com on Monday.

As per the existing provisions, foreigners have to pay a lump sum of $30 for the extension of 15 days in their visa period.

A total of 16,946 tourists from European countries visited Nepal in March. Europe and the US accounts for over 40 percent of total tourist arrivals to Nepal.

Nepal Association of Tour Operators (NATO) had requested the government, through NTB, on Sunday to charge a visa fee of $2 per additional day instead of lump sum of $30 for 15 days.
