KATHMANDU, April 15: Leaders of the big three parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML -- have said that all the parties should be ready to make compromises on outstanding issues of constitution making if a new statute were to be prepared on time.

“We are ready for compromise. So, other parties should also compromise on their stances on contentious issues,” said Devendra Paudel, principal advisor to the prime minister, speaking at Reporters´ Club in Kathmandu on Sunday. [break]

Paudel further added, “The political parties should find common ground as there are differences on some issues such as number of federal states and their demarcations among other things.”

Poudel however maintained that they would not compromise on identity-based federalism.

Speaking on the occasion, NC leader Ram Sharan Mahat said the parties should shed their vested interests to end the differences in constitution writing.

“All the political parties must put national interest before their party interests,” Mahat said, who said his party would not compromise on the principles of multi-party system.

Similarly, CPN-UML leader Pradip Gyawali said the political parties little time remains for promulgating new consitution so the parties should make compromises on contentious issues of constitution writing.

Speaking on the same occasion, the party leaders differed over formation of a new government. While Mahat said NC should lead a national consensus government before May 27 and while maintaining that his party would not join the present government, Paudel said it would be wrong for the parties to seek the prime minister´s resignation as such demand could delay the constituiton.
