According to Maoist sources, Dahal will continue to remain at the helm of party leadership, while Baidya, Dr Bhattarai, and Narayankaji Shrestha will assume the position of vice chairs. Ram Bahadur Thapa will be appointed as the general secretary. Shrestha and Thapa will hold the fourth and fifth position in the party hierarchy respectively.
Likewise, CP Gajurel and Posta Bahadur Bogati, who have been proposed secretaries, will hold the sixth and seventh position. Dr Bhattarai and Shrestha had both claimed for the third position in the party.
“Yes, we have reached consensus on the distribution of responsibilities among the leaders,” said Maoist Spokesperson Dinanath Sharma. The proposal should be endorsed by the 138-member Maoist Central Committee. “We will present the proposal at the CC for endorsement on Thursday,” said Sharma.
According to party sources, Chairman Dahal will now assume the position of the supreme commander of the Maoists´ People´s Liberation Army (PLA). Dahal had quit the post after he became prime minister, leaving the PLA under the command of Nanda Kishor Pun. The party´s establishment faction opted for collective leadership owing to mounting pressure from the hard-liners in the party.
While Baidya leads the party´s hard-line camp, Dr Bhattarai is considered to be close to Dahal. Similarly, Shrestha hails from the Unity Center (Masal), which formally united with the Maoist party last year.
With the distribution of responsibilities, leaders have also agreed to endorse party Chairman Dahal´s political document at the CC.
