KATHMANDU, Aug 27: CloudTech 2013 - a three-day fair on cloud computing - kicked off in the capital on Tuesday with the objective to showcase new IT offerings, cloud infrastructure solutions and establish ready-to-deploy applications and technologies.

The event organized by Syntegrate, a Nepali company dealing on cloud computing, in partnership with Avnet Technology Solutions of India, also aims to increase awareness among the stakeholders about cloud computing.

Sudeep Shrestha, chief system engineer of Syntegrate, said the event has been organized to introduce internationally used cloud technology to Nepal as well as to make it easier for potential clients to find domestic as well as international companies providing cloud solutions under one roof. Cloud services basically refer to network-based services which make it easier for the customers to utilize high-end information technology (IT) infrastructure from virtual hardware supported by softwares without making a huge capital investment.

Corporate houses, hospitals, financial institutions, manufacturing houses, tourism industry and government organizations where larger IT infrastructures are used can benefit from this technology.

“Cloud technology helps the organization to easily monitor, maintain and manage the network as no individual computers has to be given attention and only server needs to be managed,” Pradip Lamichhane, senior system engineer of Syntegrate, said.

According to Lamichhane, the company needs to just install server, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and thin client to use cloud computing technology which requires less manpower and attention.

VDI is a desktop-centric service that is controlled through the server while thin client is a computer program which depends on the server for carrying its tasks.

Ronald Fernandes of Avnet Technology Solutions India said there has been a paradigm shift in IT all over the globe and Nepal should now focus on cloud computing. “Currently, the companies need to focus mainly on software and then the services and hardware,” said Fernandes.

On Tuesday, the event focused mainly in the theme ´Cloud Infrastructure and Managed Service´ and the participants were mainly from business houses, hospitals, manufacturing companies and tourism industry.

According to the organizers, Wednesday´s program is basically designed for the banks and financial institutions with the theme ´Managed IT Infrastructure and Applications for Banks and Financial Institutions´ where presentation will be made on enterprise IT Solutions, introduction to FinCore i.e. core banking system, introduction to banking solution from Finacus, and cloud infrastructure.

The organizers have invited the government and development agencies on Thursday to discuss on integrated private cloud for the government, public private partnership for managed service, integrated government revenue collection architecture, data management and research analysis.

At the event, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), vendors, systems integrators and service providers have showcased their latest products and services.
