Cashier admits plotting bank robbery

TULSIPUR, Dec 25: The cashier of Tulsipur branch of Bank of Kathmandu (BOK) has admitted to hatching plans to rob his own bank to pay off his loan. According to chief of Dang Police Lokendra Bahadur Malla, cashier Khagendra Basnet confessed to the police that he plotted the bank robbery to pay off his loan.



Police on Tuesday made public Basnet and his accomplice Amar Bohara, a driver at Kumari Bank. Basnet had hired three youths to rob the bank. However, the hired bank robbers, who entered the bank in the guise of customers and made away with more than Rs 20 million from the bank on Friday evening, are still at large.[break]



Police also recovered Rs 8.679 million from Bohara´s rented room and a bank check worth Rs 990,000 from Basnet´s home. Similary, police have impounded a Bolero jeep (Ba 7 Cha 3685) used by the robbers.



“We had suspected involvement of bank staffers in the robbery since the beginning as we were informed about the incident only at around 8 pm though the robbery had actually taken place at around 6 in the evening,” said Police Inspector Ganesh Bikram Shah. “At last it has been proven”.



Basnet and Bohara are distant relatives and neighbors. Basnet had helped Bohara get the job at Kumari Bank.



An investigation team of the police led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinesh Acharya from the Central Department and Prakash Man Malla from the Central Investigation Bureau are in Dang to make a field investigation. Regional Police Chief Deputy Inspector General Tapendra Dhwaj Hamal and Zonal Police Chief Ghanananda Bhatta are also involved in the investigation.



According to Bhatta, detailed investigation into the robbery is under way. He further informed that search is on for the absconding robbers.
