KATHMANDU, Sept 30: Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Thursday announced the annual calendar of events for the year 2067/68.

According to the calendar approved by a CAN board meeting on Wednesday, Nepal will participate in five international events and organize six national events during the year.[break]

Nepali women´s team will compete in the ACC U-19 Women´s Championship scheduled for October 4 to 12 in Singapore. The Nepali team is leaving for Singapore on Friday.

Nepal will also compete in both men´s and women´s Twenty20 cricket events in the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China in November.

The men´s U-19 team will try to regain lost glory in the ACC U-19 Elite Cup in Thailand in February 2011. After winning the event for five consecutive times, Nepal failed to reach the final of the U-19 Elite Cup last year.

In the coming year, Nepal will also participate in the ACC Women´s Championship and the ACC Twenty20 Elite Cup. The dates and venues for both the events are yet to be finalized by the organizer Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

According to CAN President Binay Raj Pandey, Nepal have a strong possibility of hosting the ACC Twenty20 Elite Cup.

Among the national events, the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament will be held in Kathmandu from December 16 to 26.

The Twenty20 National Tournament for men will be held from February 3 to 12 in Kathmandu.

The One-day National Tournament, both men´s and women´s, will be incorporated in the Sixth National Games to be held in Dhangadhi in February-March, 2011 as per the National Sports Council program.

The dates and venues for inter-school girls´ and boys´ tournaments are yet to be finalized.

Besides those events, CAN will also hold Level 0 coaching courses in Pokhara and Biratnagar and Local Umpiring Course in Birgunj and Nepalgunj. ACC Development Officer Rumesh Ratnayake will visit Nepal from October 25 to 29 for Level 1 Coaching Course.

Meanwhile, CAN President Pandey informed that they will appoint eight former players as development officers in eight cricketing regions. "We are preparing terms of references and we´ll appoint eight ex-cricketers in eight regions. They will be under a development manager at the center," said Pandey.

Change in Asiad team

CAN made a few changes in the men´s team for the 16th Asian Games scheduled for November 12 to 27 in Guangzhou, China. A selection committee led by Bijay Sharma, excluded Shakti Gauchan, Sanjam Regmi and Manjeet Shrestha and included Naresh Bahadur Budhaayer, Binod Bhandari and Prithu Baskota.

"We had taken the Asiad as a practice tournament for the World Cricket League Division 3 but we failed to qualify. In this scenario, we thought it would be better to give chance to young players," said Sharma.

"We have no ICC event in near future and the CAN Technical Committee has given a guideline to pick young players," informed CAN General Secretary Tanka Paneru.

However, CAN has not made any change in the women´s team led by Nira Rajopadhyay.

Part-time coach ´possibly Indian´

CAN, which on Wednesday decided not to extend the contract of long-term coach Roy Luke Dias when it ends in December, said that the next coach for the national team would be a part-time coach.

"We do not have many events to participate in and we are looking for a coach who can look after the team as per our need," said CAN President Pandey.

CAN has asked Dias to look after the men´s team during the Asiad as his last assignment in Nepal. "We want to bid a grand farewell to Roy," said Pandey.

Pandey said that Nepali coach Jagat Tamata will be assigned for the U-19 Elite Cup and they would call a foreign coach for the ACC Twenty20. "We have received some résumés but we need a part-time coach. We have been talking about batting as our weakness, and the new coach would be a specially batting coach," he said.

"There is high possibility of hiring an Indian coach as yet," added Pandey.
