Xavier girls enter semis
KATHMANDU: The girls´ team of Xavier International has booked a semifinal berth in the 12th Don Bosco Cup Inter-college Basketball Tournament. With the help of 19 points from Seema Karki Xavier defeated Lincoln 40-20 on Thursday. Xavier will meet Himalayan White House while NASA will face the hosts in the semifinals. In the boys´ category, the hosts Don Bosco and NASA have confirmed their quarterfinal spots.
Arunodaya, Gyan Niketan in last eight
KATHMANDU: Arunodaya School and Gyan Niketan School on Thursday advanced into the last eight of the Fifth Kwiks Greenland Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the senior boys´ category. Arunodaya beat Angel´s Heart 41-30 while Gyan Niketan defeated Green Land 57-52. In the junior boys´ category, Gaurishankar School, Golden Peak School and Mount Glory School registered victories.
APF thrash ANFA Academy
SIMARA: Nepal APF Club thrashed ANFA Academy 6-0 to book semifinal spot in the Second Simara Gold Cup on Thursday. Bhim Bahadur Shrestha scored two goals while Arjun Subba, Amir Shrestha, Rajin Dhimal and Santosh Shrestha added a goal each to humiliate ANFA Academy. Friends Club, Lalitpur will take on Swayambhu Club, Kathmandu on Friday.
Newton, Angel´s Heart win titles
KATHMANDU: Defending champions Newton and Angel´s Heart clinched the title of the Sixth SEB Inter-school Volleyball Tournament in the boys´ and girls´ categories, respectively, on Thursday. Newton defeated Angel´s Heart 25-10, 25-18, 25-12 in straight sets to lift the boys´ title. However, Bikal Roka of Angel´s Heart walked away with the best player´s award. In the girls´ category, Angel´s Heart upset title favourites New Diamond in a five-set thriller. Angel´s Heart saw off the defending champions 25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 19-25, 15-6 to deny New Diamond their third consecutive title. Ramila Tandukar of New Diamond was adjudged the best player.
Nepali takes sole lead
HETAUDA: Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali is leading the Hetauda Invitational Rating Chess Tournament by three points after the completion of the second and third rounds on Thursday. Nepali defeated Dharma Bahadur Lama of Hetauda Chess Club, the organizers, in the second round and Sujendra Shrestha in the third to take the sole lead in the tournament. Meanwhile, Uttam Raj Thapa, Bikash Kuluju, Milan Rokka, Rijendra Rajbhandari, Rabindra Shakya, Niraj Niraula and unrated player Nabin Kumar Shrestha are tied for second with 2.5 points each. FIDE Master Bilam Lal Shrestha slipped to third position with two points after losing to Rabindra Shakya and former Nepal champion Nabin Tandukar. Other players to collect two points are Keshav Shrestha, Herakaji Maharjan, Prachanda Malakar, Sundar Karki, Lab Shrestha, Rajan Puri and Deepak Maharjan.
International Wrestling Show in Nepal
KATHMANDU: Nepal Players and Coaches Association in association with Golden Sine Enterprises Pvt Ltd will organize the first international men´s and woman´s wrestling Show at Kathmandu and Pokhara on February 26 and March 4 respectively.The organizers have confirmed 12 wrestlers will compete in the show. Wrestlers from USA, Japan, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia will participate in the event. The Himalayan Tiger is only the national wrestler who will compete in the show. The organizers hope to attract over 20, 000 audiences in the show.
WMMC in final
JANAKPUR: Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) set final clash against Rautahat XI in the ongoing Janaki Gold Cup Women´s Football Tournament in Janakpur. WMMC defeated Chitwan XI 4-2 in tiebreaker on Thursday after the regulation and extra time of the semifinal match remained goalless. The winners of the final that will be played on Sunday will receive Rs 25000.
Tamang artistes win friendly
KATHMANDU: Tamang artistes have won a friendly football match played against Tamang journalists on Thursday. Tamang artistes defeated the journalists 2-1 in the match held at Tundikhel to mark Sonam Lhosar. Gopi Lama and Rakesh Lama scored for the artistes´ team while Dewan Gole scored the consolation goal for the journalists.
Pradhan to officiate in pre-WC matches
KATHMANDU: Nepal´s international cricket umpire Buddhi Bahadur Pradhan is set to officiate in warm-up matches of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 in Nagpur, India. Pradhan will be in Nagpur on February 10 for two warm-up matches ahead of the World Cup scheduled for February 19 to April 2. Before that, Pradhan will take part in the Pre-World Cup Umpires and Match Referees Seminar from February 7-9 in Dubai, UAE. He will leave for Dubai on Saturday.
