BRIEF NEWS: Govt declares public holiday on Friday

KATHMANDU, Jan 12: The government has decided to give public holiday in Kathmandu on Friday to mark the formal beginning of Nepal Tourism Year 2011.



Though the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation had proposed to give holiday across the country, the Home Ministry has proposed the cabinet to give holiday only in the Kathmandu Valley, according to sources at the Home Ministry.[break]



The government has planned to formally launch Nepal Tourism Year amidst a special function at Dasharath Stadium on Friday with President Dr Ram Baran Yadav as the chief guest.



The holiday will be formally announced on Thursday after a cabinet meeting.



Two NA officials to face court martial



Two Nepal Army (NA) officials, who had allegedly thrashed three riflemen black and blue at the official residence of Chief of Army Staff Chhatraman Singh Gurung, will likely face court martial. Captain Sanjib Khanal and Lieutenant Manoj Malla who had thrashed riflemen Ram Raja Thapa, Ramesh Karki and Purna Thapa at the Lalitpur-based residence of the army chief will face court martial as the Court of Inquiry formed to investigate into the matter recommended to take action against the duo.



“The Court of Inquiry recommended court martial against them,” General BA Kumar Sharma told Republica. Ram Raja had sustained serious injuries and he was found in an unconscious state before being taken to the Alka Hospital for treatment. After he had failed to regain consciousness, doctors had referred him to the Chauni-based army hospital for further treatment.



Kidnappers held



NEPALGUNJ: A group of six persons, who abducted a schoolboy to finance gambling and purchase a motorcycle, have been arrested on Wednesday. The youths, who were hooked on gambling, had kidnapped 16-year-old Rohit Kumar Verma of Indrapur-8, Banke on January 5.



The abductors had taken Verma to India and demanded two million rupees ransom from his relatives. After the Verma family informed the abductors that they were not in a position to pay such a huge sum, the abductors settled for Rs 300,000 and freed the boy at Mihipuruwa, India.
