PYUTHAN (KHALANGA), May 2: He was born normal but lost his eyesight at the age of five. Jhapendra Rana needs a stick to feel his way around but this hasn´t prevented him from contributing to the society.

Rana, 24, is a primary level teacher at the Mahendra Higher Secondary School, Khalanga. He studies in grade 11 in the morning at the same school and teaches students of grade one to five in the afternoon.

“He can´t see but he is doing a great job teaching students,” said Principal Rikhuram Sharma.

Having passed the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exams eight years ago, Rana had gone to Kathmandu to pursue higher education but ended up honing up his musical skills instead. “I learnt music for two years and started to work in a dohori restaurant to finance my music study,” he said.

Rana then returned to Pyuthan. The school was conducting special classes for the visually challenged and Rana joined as a teacher. But the six blind students are currently taking classes along with their normal colleagues and Rana is teaching those with normal eyesight. “We have started to make the blind students study with normal so that they get along well,” principal Sharma said.

While Rana doesn´t face much difficulty in teaching his wards, he has been struggling to pursue his studies due to lack of Braille textbooks. He just teaches what he has learnt and if the lessons are new he asks one of the students to read the chapter before explaining it.

Learning without books is not that easy. But Rana has devised a way around the problem and uses a walkman to record the teachers´ lectures. “I listen to the recorded lectures at home and learn,” he explained.
