Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, who is also NC president, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, in the joint statement, urged the disgruntled political parties to immediately end the vandalism and other violent activities and seek solutions through peaceful means.
"As the country's crisis-ridden economy and the general public bear the brunt of regular general strikes, we urge all the concerned political parties to withdraw all programs of general strikes, not vandalize public, private and government property and stop the protestors from resorting to violent activities," reads the joint statement signed by the top three leaders. "We therefore appeal to the concerned political parties and others to immediately sit for talks and seek solutions through peaceful and democratic ways."
The three largest political parties have urged the disgruntled political parties to use the platform of the CA to the maximum to improve the constitution bill through their participation in the deliberations that are in the final stages.
The statement, however, didn't even hint whether the major parties are for addressing any of the agitating political parties' demands.
"The appeal for talks doesn't make any commitments. It is only at the talks table that the leaders can negotiate and settle things on certain grounds," NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel told reporters while emerging from the three-party meeting held at the CA building at New Baneshwar. The leaders at the same meeting decided to issue a joint statement calling for talks.
Paudel, however, hinted that the parliamentary party leaders of the major political parties, while addressing the CA meeting on Thursday, are likely to make some commitment to address the demands of the agitating Madhesi and Tharu communities.
According to him, the leaders may explain how the proposed Federal Commission will address the grievances of various agitating communities.
CPN-UML leader Jhalanath Khanal, while emerging from the meeting, accused the agitating political parties of inciting the general public and making them attack police posts, courts of law and other facilities. "Some have tried to aggravate the situation and compelled the police to open fire. This doesn't happen in peaceful protests," said Khanal. "We are closely watching the events and everything will be disclosed over time."
