Bicycle rally held to promote carbon-free transportation

KATHMANDU, Nov 25: In a bid to inspire people to embrace non-carbon and combustion-free mode of transportation, a bicycle rally was organized in Kathmandu city on Wednesday morning.



The bicycle rally kicked off from Jawalakhel area at around 7:30 am in the morning and was joined by 40 electric vehicles as well. "The rally underscored the possibility how bicycles can free us from our dependency on fuel," said Mahendra Man Gurung, joint secretary at Ministry of Science Environment and Technology (MoSTE).

The rally passed through Kupondol, Thapathali, Tripureshwar, Sundhara, Ratnapark, Bhotahiti, Jamal, Keshar Mahal and Putalisadak, before turning around and ending at the premises of Department of Road. The whole detour was of nearly 10 kilometers in distance. "Cycling not only helps to keep our environment clean but also makes us healthy," said Prashant Khanal, program officer at Clean Energy Nepal.


The cycle rally began with Minister for Environment Science and Technology (MoSTE) Bishwendra Paswan hitting the pedals. Addressing the gathering at the start of the rally, Paswan said bicycle rallies could be held once in a month to encourage people to take up cycling.


"At a time when the world is coming together to discuss the issues of climate change and reducing carbon emissions, this initiative will be well received in the international arena," said Krishna Chandra Poudel, secretary at the MoSTE, who also took part in the rally.
