POKHARA, July 21: Bhatbhateni Supermarket and Departmental Store on Saturday launched Farmers to Family, a platform under which farmers can directly sell vegetables to costumers in Pokhara from Saturday.

Under the platform, customers who were paying more than three fold price for vegetables will now be able to buy vegetables at cheaper price. Customers were forced to pay higher price as the vegetable sellers were taking undue profits. [break]

The store has not just provided the platform but also providing free transport service to farmers who come to the store to sell vegetables.

While the customers had been paying high price for vegetables, farmers supplying vegetables from districts like Tanahun, Syangja, Chitwan never got a fair price for their production.

Min Bahadur Gurung speaking at the program.

Owner of the store Min Bahadur Gurung said, " The farmers to family concept is the beginning of a healthy concept in trading, especially at the time when middlemen have been calling the shots." Gurung said the store has set only 3 to 20 percent proft margin from customers.

The store plans to bring vegetables from Yampa of Tanahun district. "Later, we will buy vegetables directly from farmers in Hemja," Gurung said. "Farmers should get a good price for their products and customers should not be charged exorbitantly."

According to him, 26 farmers of Yampa sold more than 2,000 kg of fresh vegetables on the first day. Farmers said they got a good price for their produce.

One of the customers, Indira Sharma of Pokhara-4, Gairapatan who bought vegetables worth Rs 200 said that she had been paying more than Rs 500 for the same quantity of vegetables in the local market.
