POKHARA, June 4: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) officials have accused banks and financial institutions (BFIs) of seeking support from political power centers to hide irregularities and weaknesses.

Speaking at a workshop organized by the Development Bankers Association, NRB´s regulations department director and spokesperson Bhaskar Mani Gyawali said that BFIs were trying to influence the central bank through political support rather than accepting and improving their weaknesses. [break]

“These activities have resulted in their facing action by the central bank,” he said citing recent action taken by NRB.

Gywali further instructed BFI directors and chief executives to correct their lapses on time as per the suggestions of the regulator rather than trying to cover up through the use of political influence. He also suggested BFIs to go for mergers for effective operations in the coming days. “NRB is also providing some benefits to those who agree to mergers,” he said.

The workshop held Friday was attended by 55 participants including directors and chief executives of 17 development banks.

Jhapat Bohara, president of Development Bankers Association, said that wrongdoing by some bankers had sullied the good name of development banks. He clarified that the association was not going to lobby the central bank on behalf of such offenders.

Participants discussed the challenges of employee management, economic transparency and economic discipline and were instructed by regulators and others in the running of BFIs.
