KATHMANDU, Nov 23: CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal has once again proposed the party leaders to be ready to quit the government, if needed, for the sake of national consensus. [break]

In his political paper presented in the party´s politburo meeting on Monday, Khanal said national consensus has become necessary as the country cannot move ahead without unity among the parties.

"There is no alternative to national consensus. For that, all the parties need to make sacrifices in one or the other way. And, our party also should be ready to make sacrifice for the same cause," Khanal´s paper said. Although senior UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal is heading the government, the party chairman has been insisting for forming a national unity government for long, arguing that writing a new constitution and taking the peace process to a logical end is not possible without Maoist participation in the government.

Khanal´s paper said, "On the one hand, the government has failed to build national consensus by convincing the Maoists, on the other hand, the Maoists also failed to create environment conducive for consensus in a responsible way."

In his 12-page report, Khanal has strongly criticized the party leaders´ indiscipline in the recent months. He has come up with a conclusion that there is an urgent need to end the growing anarchism and indiscipline in the party.

He indicated recent rival activities in the party mainly due to the differences between the factions led by himself and party senior leader KP Oli.

Prez´s move unconstitutional: Bamdev

In the meeting, party´s Vice Chairman Bamdev Gautam expressed views different than the policy adopted by the party on contemporary political issues. He filed a 16-page report terming that the President´s move on then army chief was unconstitutional. Gautam had filed a note of dissent on the issue even in the party´s standing committee meeting on May 3, 2009. The meeting had decided to withdraw the party´s support to the Maoist-led government.

Gautam on Monday said his stance has been proved right and his view be disseminated for nationwide discussion in the party´s organization.

Party´s senior leader KP Oli also filed a 25-page separate report. "His report is based more on technical issues as he has pointed out several, mistakes, errors and slips in the party´s documents," said a member.
