Vehicles operating on the long and short routes to different destinations from Ilam have stayed off the road due to the shutdown. Industries, factories, markets and schools are also closed due to the general strike. [break]
Ilam has continuously remained shut since nearly a week and it is now in for an indefinite general strike, further adding to the difficulties faced by the general public.
The discharged former Maoist PLA combatants have organized the banda putting forth a four-point demand including removing the tag of ´disqualified´ labeled on them, bringing a lumpsum financial package for long-term management of the discharged combatants, making public the facts and figures of the funds made available through the UN Peace Fund and unconditionally releasing the PLA combatants detained for various pretexts since the discharge of the former PLA combatants until now.
Similarly, the community schools in the district are also closed due to the strike action of the Nepal Community Higher Secondary Schools Teachers´ Union.
Classes in the community schools have been stopped as the majority of the teachers affiliated to the union have left for Kathmandu to participate in their ongoing Capital-centred teachers´ strike.
Meanwhile, the general strike called by the discharged former Maoist PLA combatants in the far-west region beginning today has been withdrawn in view of the concluding ceremony of the Sixth National Games in Dhangadhi of the region.
