TAPLEJUNG, May 4: The ongoing shutdown imposed by UCPN (Maoist) has caused scarcity of daily essentials in Phungling bazaar, the headquarters of Taplejung district. Consumers said there is a scarcity of pulse, rice, salt, oil and cooking gas.

Even in normal times, the district is not self-sufficient in supplies and needs regular supplies from Birtamod bazaar in Jhapa district. The ongoing strike has made life very difficult here. Food stocks at grocery shops are depleting fast. [break]

Dinesh Adhikari, vice-chairman of Taplejung Chamber of Commerce and Industries, confirmed the scarcity.

“The daily supplies from Birtamod used to be consumed within a day. It has been five days since supplies have not arrived,” he said.

Motilal Yadav, senior Agricultural Development officer at the District Agriculture Development Office, said this year hailstorm has further aggravated the supply scarcity. Hailstorms this year damaged crops worth Rs 30 million in the district.

Pasang Rita Sherpa, a resident of Bungkulung, Hangdeva-1, said the scarcity is severe. According to District Agricultural Development Office, the district needs 4,446 metric tons of food supplies from outside, which the district was getting from Birtamod and other markets.
