DHANGADHI, Nov 21: CPN-UML Vice Chairman Bamdev Gautam has said that Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal should be ready to resign if that will make consensus among the political parties possible for ending the ongoing political stalemate. [break]

“If his resignation paves the way for forging a consensus to end the long-standing deadlock among the political parties, he should be ready even to resign,” Gautam told reporters.

He said that PM Nepal should be ready to make that sacrifice for the sake of consensus.

He accused top leaders including Prime Minister Nepal, Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal of not becoming serious enough about ending the political impasse.

“In their speeches they claim that they are serious about resolving the country´s current situation. But in reality, they are not. It shows they are just pretending.”

Gautam ruled out the possibility of writing the new constitution within the stipulated time if a consensus is not forged among the NC, UML and UCPN-Maoist.

“If we fail to write the constitution and take the peace process to its logical conclusion, whichever force has arms will capture the state,” he said.

When asked about the possibility of ex-king Gyanendra´s return in case of failure to write the constitution in time, Gautam said, “No one can rule out chances of that either.”

“Those who receive support from the Nepal Army will be able to capture state power," he said, adding, “If consensus is not forged, the country will plunge into a big tragedy.”
