KATHMANDU, Jan 6: On Saturday, the day of the inauguration, the upper space in Nepal Art Council in Baber Mahal, was filled with the smell of incense. A kalash pot with poinsettia flowers were kept in one corner of the room. The artist, Deeya Bajracharya, who was holding her first solo painting exhibition at the venue, is attached to her culture and tradition and this was reflected in her painting series as well.[break]

Titled ‘Cultural Renovation’, the exhibition had 33 acrylic on canvas paintings on theme of Newari culture and tradition. Objects such as the temple bells, lights and other artifacts of cultural importance were common in all her paintings. Although the use of colors give a vibrant feel, the techniques used throughout the series are not impressive.

“Born in a religious and traditionally rich Newar family, I have always been inclined towards my culture. In my paintings, I have taken items such as the bells and portrayed them as creators of sounds of awareness,” shared Bajracharya. Bajracharya worked on this particular series for a year and a half.

The exhibition will go on till January 11.
