KATHMANDU, Nov 14: The government has sacked Juddha Bahadur Gurung, member-secretary of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), from his post.

Forest Minister Mahammad Wakil Musalman sacked Gurung as per the recently-announced government policy to cancel all political appointments made by previous governments. [break]

Gurung was appointed as member-secretary of the NTNC by former forest minister Kiran Gurung for five years. But, Gurung could serve only for three years.

Dr Siddhartha B. Bajracharya, who was earlier serving as executive officer of the NTNC, has now been promoted to the post of member-secretary. Dr Bajracharya, who has made an unparallel contribution to the development and management of Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), is associated with the NTNC since 1989.

An expert of community-based conservation, eco-tourism, protected area management and sustainable development, Dr Bajracharya has long been active in climate change adaptation and mitigation issues in the high mountain areas of Nepal. He received ´Emerging Talent Award´ presented by Ronast in 2005.

“I will try to develop this organization as an independent conservation institution during my tenure,” said Dr Bajracharya, after assuming the chief post of the NTNC.
