Baidya faction unveils second-phase protests

KATHMANDU, April 12: The United National People´s Movement Committee (UNPMC), an alliance of 12 political parties, including the Mohan Baidya faction of the ruling UCPN (Maoist), on Thursday announced second phase of protest programs to exert pressure on the government for “timely peace, pro-people constitution and national independence”.



The alliance made public a month-long nationwide protest programs at a press meet in the capital on Thursday afternoon. [break]



The alliance said it will hold mass gatherings and take out protest rallies across the country from April 20 to May 14.



As per the program, the alliance will hold mass gathering in Dhulikhel (April 20), Gaighat (April 22), Pokhara (April 24), Janakpur (April 29) and Nepalgunj (May 1). Also, the alliance will hold similar protest programs in Dhangadhi on May 2, Dipayal on May 3, Butwal on May 4 and Baglung on May 7.



Similarly, the alliance will organize protest rallies in Kathmandu on April 26 and May 5. The alliance has announced signature campaign from May 8 to May 13.



Addressing the press meet, coordinator of the alliance CP Gajurel, who belongs to the Baidya faction, said they would continue with their protest programs in the streets and parliament for timely peace, pro-people constitution and national independence.



He stated that an overwhelming participation of people in the first phase of protest programs had shown that people are not happy with the government and the political parties.



Gajurel also accused the government using force to suppress their protest programs. Several leaders associated with the alliance were wounded in the torch rally taken out by the alliance on Wednesday in the capital. “It reminded us of the Panchayat regime and Gyanendra Shah´s direct rule,” added Gajurel.



He also criticized Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal agreeing to allow the Nepal Army to take charge of the Maoist cantonments.
