Awale, Deshar win opening matches

KATHMANDU, Dec 12: Rohit Awale of Patan Boxing Club and Narendra Deshar of Nepal Police Club won their respective matches on the opening day of the First Nationwide Open Boxing Tournament on Wednesday.



Awale defeated Raju Kumal of Chitwan and Deshar beat Sunil Rai of Ilam during their men´s 56 kg bouts held at Chinikhel VDC in Gamcha.[break]



In the men´s 49 kg category, Dhanraj Mahato of Tribhuvan Army Club defeated Kamal Khadka of Kathmandu while Sushil Thapa of Naxal Yuva Mandal ´A´ beat Kumar Lama of Budhanilkantha.



In other matches of the same weight category, Sanjay Bhujel of Kathmandu beat Narayan Bhujel of Udayapur, Gyanendra Nagarkoti of Meghdoot Boxing Club “A´ defeated Tirtha Bahadur Gharti of Banke, Rakesh Patuwar of Meghdoot ´C´ saw off Buddhi Raj Khadka of Dang and Resham Bahadur Shahi of Army Club emerged victorious over Sanjay Nepali of Naxal ´C´.



Likewise, Dilu Rai of Sunsari, Bikram Pariyar and Asha Tamang of APF Club ´B´ also won their respective matches in the same weight category.



Earlier, National Sports Council (NSC) Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama inaugurated the tournament amidst a function. Lama said the tournament has given opportunity to emerging players to showcase their talents.



Altogether 27 teams from different districts, clubs as well as the departmental teams -- Army, Police and APF -- are competing in the four-day tournament. Ninety-nine male boxers are vying for 10 golds while 22 female pugilists are competing for seven golds in the tournament.
