“We strongly condemn attack and restrictions on journalists, we are very concerned about the attacks,” Koirala said in a program organized to welcome the new executive committee of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ).[break]
“We believe attack on press is attack on democracy and attack on Nepali Congress,” Koirala said remembering media’s role in democratic movements and political changes.
He also added that NC has always fought for democracy without compromising on press freedom.
Earlier, FNJ president Shiva Gaunle briefed him on recent attacks on media including fatal physical attack on Republica journalists Khilanath Dhakal in Biratnagar raising concerns over the working environment for journalists.
“It seems like there is no press freedom at all,” he said. “And, it’s sad that political parties are not concerned about it.”
Meanwhile, FNJ decided to send a mission to Biratnagar analyze situation of Dhakal and create pressure on authorities to immediately take actions against the culprits.
The mission consists of General Secretary Om Sharma, central committee member Mohan Kaji and FNJ Morang district chairman Bikram Niraula.
