Army School defends inter-school title

KATHMANDU, Aug 11: Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya (Army School), Bhaktapur defended the title of Coca-Cola Cup Inter-school Boys´ National Football Tournament on Thursday while Juddhodaya Public (JP) High School, Kathmandu took home the girls title.



During the final played at Dasharath Stadium, Army School registered a thrilling 5-4 win over Siddhartha Vanasthali Institute (SVI), Balaju, Kathmandu, following a goalless stalemate during the regulation time. [break]



Earlier JP beat Shree Gautam Buddha High School 2-0 with twin goals from skipper Sangita Khanal. In the 70-minute match, Khanal scored in the 37th and 41st minute.



The 13-year Khanal from Ramechhap stole the show and netted the first goal in pass of Bimala Shahi and doubled the target with a brilliant shot from near the penalty spot utilizing a pass from Ashmita Lama.



Out of total five matches played, Khanal netted in four and succeeded to score eight including a hat-trick.



"I want to play football in the future and want to be a good forward," said Khanal who started playing football just from four months ago after her school conducted training for the tournament. She was selected among fifty trainees by the former national assistant coach Mrigendra Mishra. The match was also her first experience in football.



"I am very much delighted for this achievement after a short training of four months and my trail was successful," said coach Mishra adding, "If these young girls get opportunity in future they can do better than this. But they are still to learn more.







In the boys´ match, Rohit Lama failed to convert spotkick for the SVI which cost title for his side while Army players succeeded to convert all five shots. Lama´s third spotkick was denied by Army School custodian Milan Giri.



Army School skipper Uttam Kumar Gurung, Sanjeev Rana Magar, Sansar Gurung, Yushan Rai and Khadga Magar achieved targets. Similarly, Kabi Khadka, Sunil Lama, Sujit Lama and skipper Sajin Baidhya netted fro SVI.



SVI got limited to 10-man during the stoppage time of the 80-minute match after Bikash Pyakurel got marching order for using abusive language to referee promptly after he was shown the yellow card. He, however, did not leave the field after getting the card and played for about a minute. But the assistant referee and Army players reminded the referee and Pyakurel was sent off from the ground.



Winner and runner-up of both boys´ and girls´ section bagged a purse of Rs 200,000 and Rs 100,000 while third and fourth team were awarded with Rs 50,000 and 25,000 respectively.



Deepjyoti Bidyashram, Banke, and Saraswoti Higher Secondary School, Kanchanpur, in girls section, and Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya and Nepal Adarsha, both from Pokhara, in boys section finished third and fourth respectively.



Fair play team awards went to Budhanilkantha School, Kathmandu, under boys section, and Deepjyoti Bidyasram, under girls section.
