KATHMANDU, Nov 28: The National Tuberculosis Day on Wednesday might have witnessed several formal programs across the country where the disease claims over 5000 people each year. But for the 53 children aged 1 to 16 and 43 elderly women at Aamaghar of Dilshova Shrestha, the 59th national TB day was no less than a festival.

“All the mothers and the children woke up at 5am to get ready for the day. We served boiled eggs, doughnut and milk with horlicks in the morning, unlike black tea and biscuits that we regularly provide,” Shrestha said. [break]“Everyone is in a festive mood as they know they will get delicacies throughout the day,” said Shrestha.

Marking the TB day, the Amaghar family also participated in the awareness campaign led by Nepal anti-tuberculosis association. The children and the elderly also went door-to-door to distribute pamphlets and calendars with information about TB.

“At a formal program held in the noon, Dr Dirga Singh Bam, among other people, informed our children and mothers about the disease and its prevention and cure,” Shrestha said.

As per the data of the World Health Organization, the prevalence of tuberculosis in the country is 173 cases per 100,000 people.
