To make the matter worse, the employees of the District Development Committee have also stopped working from Sunday, expressing solidarity with the DDC staff, who have been staging a phase-wise protest program, putting forward three-point demands including the formation of Local Body Service Commission. The registration of birth, death, marriage, migration, and land ownership certificates, which are of a great importance to the citizens, remains disrupted ever since the officials and staff of the local bodies took the street on September 1.
As the DDC staffers too have joined the protest of the VDCs employees, who have been staging a sit-in protest at the DDC premises in Rajbiraj, the service seekers cannot but hope the strike will end shortly.
People urgently seeking citizenship certificates and passports are affected the most.
“I need to obtain a citizenship certificate for the admission in a technical course. I don´t know when this protest will be over,” said Bhawana Jha, of Tilathi-7.
Hundreds of service seekers come to the VDC offices and return empty-handed every day.
According to Parashuram Yadav, Chairman of the Joint Struggle Committee formed by the staffers working in the local bodies, they were compelled to take to the street after the government paid no heed to their demands.
Yadav also said that similar protests were being held in Udayapur, Kapilvastu, Dhankuta, Jhapa, Sarlahi and Rautahat districts.
“Our protest has entered into the sixteenth day, but we have not received any assurance on our demands from any of the governmental authorities,” said Pradhumna Pokharel, a central member of VDC employees´ association. “We would continue the sir until our demands are met.”
He also warned of a more stringent protest program if the government keeps turning a deaf ear.
The agitating side on Monday forwarded a memorandum letter to Chairman of the Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi, requesting him to be serious about their demands.
