Pro-Maoist worker union -- All Nepal Industrial Worker Association (ANIWA) -- had launched indefinite strike three days ago, bringing operations of factories both inside Pokhara Industrial Estate and outside it to a grinding halt. The union enforced the strike after the promoters ignored their calls to double salary and wages.[break]
The strike had affected about 100 industries in the district.
Jhalak Acharya, general manager of Pokhara Foods, told Republica that the industrialists have expressed commitment to implement the decision of minimum wage fixation committee and raise allowance by Rs 1,500 until the committee revises minimum wage.
The committee comprises of representatives from the government, entrepreneurs and trade union. As per the agreement, the allowance will be added in monthly salary of last month and will be provided to laborers of all category including daily wage earners.
The committee has fixed minimum daily wage of workers at Rs 190. After the agreement on Tuesday, workers in Kaski district will get a minimum of Rs 240 per day.
Around 2,500 workers are employed with 53 industries inside Pokhara Industrial Estate, according to Khatri.
Labor unions of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML had also supported the strike. The workers had enforced indefinite closure of factories from Tuesday.
