AFC suspends Nepali footballers 'involved' in match-fixing

KATHMANDU, Oct 19: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has provisionally suspended five Nepalese football players for their alleged involvement in match fixing.

Issuing a press statement on Monday AFC said that it has 'provisionally suspended five Nepalese individuals linked to match-fixing'.Former national player and former Three Star Coach Anjan KC, former national player Bikash Singh Chhetri and national players Sagar Thapa, Sandeep Rai and Ritesh Thapa have been accused on match fixing.

In the press statement, AFC Acting General Secretary Dato' Windsor John said, "The arrests show that the AFC's action against match-fixing is bringing results. Match-manipulation is a serious threat to the development of the game in Asia and the AFC has a zero tolerance policy towards match-fixing and anyone involved in it."

The statement further said it might extend the suspensions for a further 20 days as the investigation is still ongoing.

"The AFC has today written to FIFA asking for the bans to be imposed worldwide," the statement added.
