The committee that was formed by the Directorate of the Animal Health (DAH) has Department of Livestock Services (DLS), Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and co-operatives of meat traders as stakeholders.

“We have published tender notice for the second time asking interested co-operatives of meat traders to submit their proposals within 15 days,” chief of the committee Dr Baburam Gautam said.

He said the committee had to publish notice for the second time after all the proposals received earlier failed to meet the minimum requirements.

“Proposals submitted for the first time rarely meet the specified minimum requirements. So we have sought proposals again to be submitted within 15 days,” Dr Gautam added.

According to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), the abattoirs will be constructed in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur and in Kritipur.

“The abattoirs will have advanced equipments,” said Dr Gautam. “Each abattoir will have the capacity to slaughter about 60 buffalos and equal number of goats in a day.”

The slaughterhouses will also have the facilities to test the health of the animals to prevent killing of the sick ones and cold room with enough space to store the quantity of meat produced.

“We will not compromise on the issue of public health, all the animals will be examined thoroughly before they are killed,” Gautam said.

The respective municipality will bear 20 percent of the expanses and 10 percent will be collected from the co-operatives of the meat traders. He revealed that after the construction of abattoirs, meat sellers will not be allowed to kill animals outside them.

Dr Gautam said the slaughterhouses will be run by co-operatives that will also be responsible for transporting animals to the slaughterhouses and meat products to the shops. He said if the co-operatives failed to manage slaughterhouses properly, the municipality will take the ownership.
