"It is a matter of pride for the country, the government and the people to get to know that Acharya has been appointed to a highest post in the UN system," Shrestha said in his comment. [break]
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday appointed Acharya as the Under Secretary General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States. Acharya has become the first Nepali to reach to such a high-ranking post of the UN system. Earlier, Kul Chandra Gautam had been an assistance secretary general of the UN.
"It is the recognition of Nepal´s contribution to the international community and the UN," said Shrestha, and revealed that the government had made a special request to the UN Secretary General to choose Acharya for the coveted post.
In the meantime, the government has started discussion on naming successor of Acharya for the post of UN permanent representative, according to Shrestha. But naming new permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations is not going to be an easy task.
"First there should be an agreement among coalition partners on what should be done to the law requiring parliamentary hearing for any ambassadorial nominee," said Shrestha, "Agreement among the coalition partners alone will not be sufficient, there needs agreement among other parties to overcome the legal hurdle."
