KATHMANDU, April 17: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of parliament on Tuesday directed the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction to account for Rs 461.26 million of the total Rs 990 million provided to the Maoist combatants in “advance” some five years ago.

A meeting of PAC held at Singha Durbar said the ministry had flouted the financial working procedures by converting the “advance” amount into “grant” through a cabinet decision on May 1, 2009. [break]

Maoist leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara had then received the amount for the management of the Maoist combatants.

However, the Maoists had failed to furnish expenditure details of Rs 461.26 million.

According to Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker in PAC Dhan Raj Gurung, the Maoists had converted the “advance” amount into ´grant´ through a cabinet meeting instead of furnishing expenditure details. “We suspect the amount was misused," he said.
