Natural water fountains have dried up in the villages like Alital and Jogbudha along with the drought-striven summer and the number of displaced families in just the two villages is estimated to be more than 70.[break]
“We did not even a drop of water to drink,” said Chandra Bahadur Magar of Alital who recently left his birthplace.
In Nwali area of Alital VDC, locals are distributed 3 liters of drinking water each after a fountain dried up a few weeks ago.
People of Noula, Fallekharka, Makawanpur, Baddumallas and Bumithala, among others are also leaving their villages due to water problem.
Meanwhile, people living in several other villages including Basnyota, Kajigada, Dhadhigada, Khoriya, Simalbanda, Sahisoun and Aaidungrain are compelled to walk for at least three hours to fetch water.
While the hilly villages are turning empty, villages in low-lying areas adjoining streams are seeing influx of new migrants. The Rampur area of Jogbuda VDC is one such place with huge number of new settlers.
The District Development Committee says 60 percent of water sources in the district have dried up due to increasing deforestation.
