Speaking at a function in Bharatpur, Pokharel said, “The seven-point deal brought us closer to the Maoists, but it put the peace process and constitution drafting on the back burner,” said Pokharel. [break]
He argued that the constitution drafting and the peace process will not see the light of the day without the Maoist quitting its “extremist stand”.
The UML secretary also argued that his party is facing difficulties forging consensus with the Nepali Congress (NC).
Pokharel argued that the UML has accommodated the views of both the NC and the UML. “That is why the party at times seems closer to the NC and sometimes to the Maoists,” he added.
Pokharel is from the KP Oli faction. It may be recalled that the UML factions led by Oli and Madhav Kumar Nepal came down heavily on Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal for striking the seven-point deal with the Maoists. The seven-point deal had paved the way for Khanal to become the prime minister.
The deal on power-sharing between the Maoists and the UML has also raised NC´s hackles.
Let’s live in peace and embrace diversity
