The District Police Office (DPO), Rautahat, said five people died in the district on Wednesday night due to extreme cold.[break]
The deceased have been identified as Sahodari Devi, 70, of Bariyapur; Shila Kumari, 8, of Banjara-6; Hulal Sahani, 75, of Dharmapur-8; Batiya Devi of Bairiya-6; and Jaina Khatun, 70, of Gamhariya-3. With the recent deaths the total deaths in Rautahat due to cold this winter has reached 33 and most of the victims are elderly and children, according to the District Police Office, Rautahat.
Most of the victims are elderly and children. Local people in Rautahat have been complaining that the administration has not been doing enough to address the problem.
However, Chief District Officer of Rautahat, Shivahari Adhikari, claimed that he has directed the VDCs to arrange bonfires in the villages. He claimed that the administration has been arranging bonfires at various places of the municipality for the relief of the people.
Likewise, Abtar Ram, 70, and an unidentified man of around 50 years of age died in Bara district while they were being taken to hospital on Wednesday night. Police said the two were suffering from cold-related problems.
With their death, the number of people dying from cold in Bara this winter reached eight, police said.
Meanwhile, a woman in Sunsari died due to cold. Ratan Devi Yadav, 50 of Chadbela-8 died due to cold on Wednesday afternoon. She died on the way to hospital.
