45 tremors above 4.5 in Richter scale felt till date

KATHMANDU, April 27: According to European Mediterranean Seismological Centre, a total of 45 tremors above 4.5 in Richter scale and 15 above 6.5 in Richter scale were felt in Nepal till Sunday evening.



Earthquakes claim around 2500 lives so far


The death toll by earthquakes that struck Nepal on Saturday and Sunday claimed a total of 2,430 lives (1,152 in capital and 1268 outside the valley) and injured 5,936 till Sunday evening, the Home Ministry said.


The helicopters from Nepal Army and India have been airlifting injured victims to safe places and capital from various places of Rasuwa, Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Nuwakot, Dhading, Ramechhap, Gorkha and Kavrepalanchowk, among other districts.


The government has set up 16 relief centres at various places in the capital. 


Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat after attending an emergency meeting today said that the government has decided to give Rs 40,000 to deceased family members as compensation.

The government has also asked the citizens to remain calm and help in rescue operation.


FNCCI sets up relief fund; Rs 4 million collected so far


The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), an umbrella organization of business entrepreneurs, has set up a relief fund of Rs 4 million with Rs 1 million from its side, said Acting President of FNCCI, Pashupati Murarka.


Big earthquake just a hoax: Minister Rijal

Minister for Information and Communications Dr Minendra Rijal has requested the citizens not to go with hoax that powerful earthquake will soon strike in Nepal. "No one can predict earthquake. We request everyone not to go with the hoax," the minister added.

Political leaders visit Gorkha


Leaders from various political parties visited to earthquake-hit areas of Gorkha district today on a helicopter.  However, the helicopter could not land due to bad weather.


Former prime minister Baburam Bhattarai, Nepali Congress chief whip Chinkaji Shrestha and CA member Cham Bahadur Gurung visited affected areas with team of doctors. The team visited Barpak, epicenter of Saturday’s earthquake. The doctors were dropped at Arughat VDC, said Bhattarai. They returned capital with few injured victims.


“Barpak and nearby villages looked devastated from helicopter,” Bhattarai said.

An earthquake of 7.6 Richter scale on Saturday (epicenter in Gorkha) and 6.5 Richter scale on Sunday (epicenter in Sindhupalchowk) struck in Nepal. Besides earthquakes, Nepal also received after-shocks multiple times.


Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has struck the grief-stricken Kathmandu citizens on Sunday evening.

People camp in various open areas


The fear-struck people of the valley have camped in various open areas by themselves.

Likewise, 150 people died in Sindupalchwok, 126 in Dhading, 133 in  Nuwakot,  120 in Gorkha and 71 in Rasuwa.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake rattled Kathmandu valley and other parts of the country at 11:56 am, causing  more than 100 aftershocks within the interval of some minutes and some hours in some cases.


Earlier Government Spokesperson and Minister for Information and Communications Minendra RijalMinister Rijal said that the exact death could have been higher by three fold.

Minister Rijal informed that the Gorkha district was hit hardest by the quake as the epicenter of this mega earthquake was there. The Nepal Army is rescuing the victims at on a war footing scale.

He also shared that in Kathmandu valley, the rescue and relief works have been expedited from various 13 places.
