20 dead, 16 injured in separate bus accidents

BUTWAL/JHAPA, July 22: Sixteen people have been killed when a bus bound to Sandhikharka from Butwal veered off the road fell some 200 meters down into a ravine in Arghakhachi district, Sunday evening.



The accident happened at around 5:30 pm, SSP Bam Bahadur Bhandari at Lumbini Zonal Police Office told Reublica Online. Four others have been injured in the mishap. [break]



Among the deceased, vehicle owner Narayan Prasad Panthi of Bangi VDC, Arghakhanchi, driver Rajendra Patel of Chanauta, Kapilvastu, Sita Basnet of Wangla VDC, Meghraj Khanal of Shringa VDC, Gulmi and Krishana Prasad Chaudhary are so far identified. Identities of others are yet to be ascertained.



Rescue works are being carried out after a rescue team from the district police office reached the incident site. The incident site lies some six kilometers from the district headquarters.



In a similar incident, four people were killed on the spot and 12 others injured in a bus accident along the Ghailadubba section of the East-West Highway, Laxmipur,in Jhapa.



According to police, the deceased have been identified as Dharma Chaudahry, 52, Baruwa Chaudhary, 40, Nirmal Rajbanshi,22, and Thiru Rajbanshi.



The identities of the injured are yet to be ascertained. They are undergoing treatment at Birtamod Hospital. The ill-fated bus (Ko 1 Kha, 882) met with the accident while it was returning from a funeral procession at Kankaimaidham.
