The water gushing from several rain-swollen nearby rivers has inundated almost entire municipality area and some other parts of Kailali district. Ram Nath Chaudhari, of North Behadi, became homeless after the flood flattened his brick and cement house, which he had built just three months ago. "We shifted our belongings to a safer place after the rains became more intense and water started to accumulate Thursday night. The house collapsed in the morning," said Ram Nath.
Like Ramnath, Bir Bahadur Chaudhari´s family has also taken refuge at a neighbor´s house after his own house was inundated with floodwaters. Bir Bahadur, who has been living in Behadi for the past 15 years, said this the first time he saw such a massive flooding in the village.
"Flash floods would occur during past years also but they would cause only minor damage, but this year´s flooding is unprecedented," Bir Bahadur said informing that over a dozen houses have been inundated in Behadi itself. Radha Nyaupane, a local, said this flooding is the biggest she has seen in her 25 years in the village.
The marketplace and schools in the municipality remain closed due to the indundation. Panchodaya Higher Secondary School and Aishwarya Vidya Niketan among other schools have postponed the scheduled terminal exams due to the flooding. Floodwaters have also entered the Seti Zonal Hospital. In Sripur of Dhangadhi, Lal Bahadur Kathayet´s house collaposed killing 11 goats.
Locals informed that around three feet of water has accumulated on the ground floor of their houses.
"We were asleep at night oblivious of the flooding in our area. We woke up at around 4 in the morning only to find our house in the middle of a pool and water was already seeping inside the house," said Dayaram Upadhayaya, of Dhangadhi-8. Over 100 families of landless and freed Kamaiya living in Basantatol have been displaced due to the flooding. They have currently been accommodated at the Dhandgadhi Higher Secondary School.
Udaya Bahadur Adhikari, the acting chief district officer of Kailali, informed that over 1,000 households in Dhangadhi Municipalty ward no 1,3,4,5,7,8 and 11 and another 1,000 families in Malneta, Chaumala, Geta , Masuriya, Pahalmanpur VDCs among other area in the district have been displaced. Army and police personnel have been deployed for the rescue of those stuck in the flooding.
