15 mountaineers confirmed dead in avalanche in Everest

KATHMANDU, April 26: At least 15 mountaineers are reported to have been killed in the avalanche triggered by the Saturday earthquake in the world's tallest mountain Sagarmatha or Everest.

The mountaineers were returning to the base camp when they were hit by the avalanche, according to Tourism Secretary Suresh Man Shrestha. Meanwhile, efforts to rescue those trapped in the avalanche is underway with the help of helicopters based in the Lukla airport.

A team led by Secretary Shrestha has been working from the Tribhuvan International Airport since this morning to coordinate the rescue effort and airlift those injured to the capital. Some 61 mountaineers are reported to have been injured in the incident and they are being brought to Lukla from Firiche. A total of 42 mountaineering expedition teams had received permission to climb the Mt Everest this year. RSS
