KATHMANDU, Feb 28: Ten Nepalis who were in South Korea under the Employment Permit System (EPS) have been arrested from their respective companies by immigration officials last Saturday.

The workers have been arrested from Kwangju, Waegwan, Ansan, Incheon, Taegu, Suwan and Seoul. Most of them had been earlier arrested and deported from the country and they had returned again under the EPS system. [break]

Nepali workers have also been affected in the recent drive by the Korean government which has already arrested around 200 workers from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh and other countries, according to Manju Thapa, a local journalist in Korea.

A source at the Nepali Embassy in Seoul said the Nepali workers have been arrested for using forged documents with wrong date of birth.

"Two have already left Korea while the rest have been detained in Incheon and will be deported from there," the source added.

Chief of the EPS Section at the Department of Foreign Employment Mahesh Acharya said those going to Korea under the EPS should be aged between 18-39 years and should have a clean record.

"The applicants would bring valid citizenship certificates issued by their respective districts and we can´t question the authenticity of a valid government certificate," Acharya answered asked why those with incorrect age were not screened here in Nepal.
