Dhanda belongs to every person who’s ever dreamt of money, security and a good life for their family. Like most young people, Arjun (Arpan Thapa) dares to dream about a better life for himself and his family. Through Arjun, the film addresses the ongoing situation of migrant workers and the many unlucky ones caught in the trap of the middle men. [break]
It opens with Arjun in a critical condition, numerous stitches on his face and body and a haggard haunted look on his face. The visual quality of the film seems to have been compromised with, and that takes away from the quality of the overall film. Another problem is that though Arjun is said to be insane, it’s hard to digest the fact that he seems to be smart enough to track down those who’ve wronged him.
However, Dhanda deserves to be watched. The performances are commendable, the music carries us along the storyline and the makeup is almost flawless. The film has a lot of violence and subsequently, a lot of bloodshed. The beatings seem very realistic. The film has paid attention to small details too.

For instance, the middle man’s room is strewn with dirty dishes, clothes pegged and broken bits of this and that, creating a normal room in the heart of the city.
Arpan Thapa’s silent but overwhelmed and vengeful act is terrifying. In his role as the good husband, he is likeable and his vulnerability in the big bad city is moving. Dhurba Koirala as the disgruntled father gives a great performance and the slimy ‘mama’ that is Kamal Mani Nepal shines in his role. The other noteworthy actor is Samuna KC, who as Arjun’s wife, gives us an uncomplicated performance.
Sujil Karmacharya’s music suits the tempo of the film. Nima Lama has done an excellent job with the makeup, making everything look so realistic that it’s hard to look at Arjun’s face without flinching.
If you believe that Nepali films are heading towards the right direction, you will not want to miss Dhanda.
