The closed-door session of the party in the ongoing eighth general convention made the decision to have one chairman and general secretary each, Friday night. The meeting had completed its business at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday after endorsing political document tabled by erstwhile party general secretary Jhala Nath Khanal and statue amendment proposal tabled by leader Amrit Bohora.
On the final day of the UML gala on Saturday, 1816 party delegates are going to elect a party leader for the top job of chairman and other office bearers – vice-chairmen, general secretary and secretaries. For the top job, leaders Khanal and KP Sharma Oli are in the fray though they are yet to file their candidacy officially. The delegates are also going to elect more than 100 Central Committee members.
While endorsing the political document, the delegates directed the party leaders not to amend or change the party’s guiding principle – People’s Multiparty Democracy, rather “enrich” it. They also asked the leaders to confront ultra-leftists ideologically and politically.
